I try to teach my kids the meaningfulness of a thankyou card. I know how happy it makes their great grandparents to receive one from them.

When I was in high school I was at a community fair with some friends. While standing in line for a ride I saw a neighbor who commented that her little girl really wanted to go on the ride but the mother couldn’t becauses she had another child who was too small for the ride. I offered to take the child on the ride with me. I mean, who wouldn’t, right? I thought nothing of it, but some time later I received a beautiful thank you note from the mother. She told me her daughter had been so thrilled to go on the ride & she wanted to thank me for taking time away from my friends to help out a mom & her children. I was touched by the thank you note alone, but to my surprise, included with it was a check for $20. This brought me to tears, because we were short on money & I had a specific need I’d been praying about and this money helped me to meet that need.

My parents divorced when I was 22. At age 26, my Dad talked to me about wanting to get re-married. Being his only child, it was very important to him and his bride-to-be, that I was comfortable with this. I explained that as long as his new wife made my dad happy – then I would be happy! After the wedding, I received the loveliest thank you letter from my dad which remarked on my accepting and welcoming “Donna” into our lives, and that he knew how difficult that must be (it was!) seeing as he saw his dad get re-married. They have been married for about 20 years now, and still going strong!!

A very meaningful thank you card I sent was to some dear friends who brought meals to me and my family when I miscarried. The card was nothing compared to the love they showed, but it was sent with heartfelt thanks! God bless those who help others when they are down!
